So, a couple of months ago my friend came out as non binary and all of my classmates were very supportive of them and everything was going fine. But today our religious education teacher started her maternity leave and a new teacher came to teach us. We had written everyone's pronouns on the whiteboard so people could use the right pronouns for us. The teacher saw the whiteboard and asked Sol (my friend who had come out as non binary) if they had been to a psychiatric ward or a mental hospital because they were non binary and told Sol that they were a girl. The whole class was really shocked and we all really don't want her to be our teacher for the next couple of months so what should we do?

thank you so much! me and the rest of my year went to the head of year and they have decided not to renew the teacher's contract at the school so she won't be teaching us anymore. She was also made to apologise to all the classes in the year which was very fun to watch as she was very embarrassed and awkward!
I'm very sorry that your teacher is such a horrible person. First of all, make sure that you (and your classmates, though you can't really control them) validate Sol and treat them with the respect they deserve. I'm not sure how your school (and school district) feel(s) about the LGBTQ+ community, but if the school is supportive I would suggest that you tell someone else (a teacher, principal, etc.) Even if they don't do anything, at least someone knows what's going on. If they are pieces of shit (aka all the nasty -phobics), there isn't much you can do except supporting Sol. Maybe you can organize some classmates to advocate for Sol and wider issues in the school regarding LGBTQ+ students. I'm not sure what would be possible in this situation, but be assured that you should start by being just as supportive of Sol. You seem like a wonderful friend for them to have.
